About

Highway Springs Campground is a small, convenient Forest Service campground located directly off US Highway 160, approximately 4.1 miles west of South Fork, Colorado in the Rio Grande National Forest. The campground features two distinct loops: the lower loop is shaded by aspen and scattered ponderosa pines and contains all tent-designated sites, while the upper loop circles a knoll above the highway with mature ponderosa pines providing shade and excellent views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains. The campground has 13 sites total, including 3 pull-through sites suitable for RVs. All sites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Two vault toilets serve the campground. Campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site, and firewood is not provided. The South Fork of the Rio Grande River lies in the valley just south of the campground, offering fishing opportunities for those with a valid Colorado fishing license. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with self-service fee collection via envelopes at the entrance. Cash or check payment is required. The facilities were remodeled in 2010 and the campground typically sees light usage, making it a good option for travelers seeking a quick overnight stop along the Wolf Creek Pass corridor.

Directions

From South Fork, Colorado: Take US Highway 160 southwest 4.1 miles toward Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Pass. Turn left (south) into the campground directly off the highway. Look for a large brown and cream colored sign.
