About
Hansen Mill Campground is a small, isolated dispersed camping area situated at 10,800 feet elevation in the Rio Grande National Forest, approximately 16.8 miles east of Creede via Forest Road 600 (Pool Table Road). The campground features 3 designated dispersed sites with picnic tables and fire rings, though additional primitive camping is possible in the surrounding area. This horse-friendly location provides ample grazing areas and space for trucks and trailers. The campground serves as an important trailhead and access point for several recreational opportunities. East Bellows Trail #790 departs from Hansen Mill into the La Garita Wilderness, leading to Wheeler Geological Area as a foot or horse trail only. Trail #798 (West Alder) also originates here and is open to vehicles 50 inches wide or less and non-motorized users. A 4x4 road to Wheeler Geological Area begins at the campground. East Bellows Creek offers fishing opportunities nearby. Campers will find stunning vistas of distant mountains from this isolated location. The site includes a vault toilet but no potable water or trash service, so visitors must bring their own water and pack out all garbage. The campground is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day camping limit. While open year-round, the site may be inaccessible during winter due to snow or spring road closures. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. This is bear country, and proper food storage is required.
Directions
From Creede, travel southeast on Colorado Highway 149 toward South Fork for 7.3 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 600 (Pool Table Road), then approximately 9.5 miles northwest on Forest Road 600.
