About

Hansen Mill Dispersed Campground sits at a remote 10,800 feet in the Rio Grande National Forest, roughly 17 miles east of Creede via Forest Road 600 (Pool Table Road). This small, quiet site provides expansive mountain vistas and serves as a base camp for exploring the Wheeler Geologic Area, one of Colorado's most unique geological formations accessible by 4WD or horseback. The campground features 3 designated dispersed sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, though additional dispersed camping space is available in the surrounding area. Facilities are primitive: a vault toilet is provided, but there is no potable water, trash service, or other amenities. Campers must pack out all refuse and bring adequate water supplies. Bear-aware food storage is required from April through December. Hansen Mill is particularly well-suited for horse camping, with room for trucks and trailers plus nearby grazing (certified weed-free hay required). The East Bellows Trail #790 departs from here, providing foot and horse access into the La Garita Wilderness and to Wheeler Geologic Area. East Bellows Creek offers nearby fishing opportunities. The 14-day camping limit applies.

Directions

From Creede: Travel southeast on Colorado Highway 149 for 7.3 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 600 (Pool Table Road). Turn and continue approximately 9.5 miles northwest on Pool Table Road to the campground.
