About
Packers Cabin sits on Long Ridge in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, approximately 1.5 hours from Brookings, Oregon. Built around 1930 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it served as the base for Forest Service packers who used horse and mule trains to supply remote lookouts and field crews. The cabin has been renovated with barrier-free access including ramps, wide doorways, and accessible door handles. The cabin accommodates up to 12 guests with one double bunk and ten single bunks equipped with foam pads. A wood-burning stove provides heat with firewood supplied. There is no electricity or potable water on site. A natural spring exists nearby but requires boiling for at least five minutes before consumption. Guests must bring sleeping bags, lanterns, and their own water supply. The surrounding area offers excellent recreation including fishing for trout, steelhead, and salmon on the Chetco River. The Oregon Redwoods Trail provides accessible hiking through old-growth coastal redwoods at the northern limit of their range. The cabin lies within the 2017 Chetco Bar Fire area, and visitors will see a landscape in ecological transition. The Pacific Ocean is only 17 miles away.
