About

Packers Cabin was originally constructed around 1930 and served as the headquarters for the Forest Service packer who supplied lookouts and field crews by horse or mule pack trains. The barrier-free facility was renovated to provide accessible lodging within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest on Long Ridge. The yellow three-room cabin could accommodate up to 12 people and featured a wood-burning stove, double bunk and ten single bunks with foam pads, table and chairs, and outdoor accessible toilet, picnic table and fire ring. The site has been in Forest Service use since 1914 when the phone line to the Long Ridge Lookout was completed. The cabin survived both the 2002 Biscuit Fire and 2017 Chetco Bar Fire, but was destroyed by the Cabin Fire on September 2, 2025, despite rapid response from multiple firefighting resources. The area offers hiking, wildlife viewing, and fishing opportunities. The nearby Chetco River provides angling for trout, steelhead, and salmon in season. The accessible Oregon Redwoods Trail travels through a grove of old-growth coastal redwoods at their northern range limit. The landscape shows effects of the 2017 Chetco Bar Fire.
