Nook Bar Camping and Day Use Area
Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Winter camping on the gravel bar is discouraged due to frequent high-water events. Garbage service is only available from Memorial Day through Labor Day; pack out trash outside this period.
About
Nook Bar Camping and Day Use Area provides dispersed camping on a large gravel river bar along the Wild and Scenic Chetco River in southwestern Oregon. The site accommodates tents and small trailers, with a few shaded spots available along the tree line. Campers have direct access to the pristine Chetco River, known for its crystal-clear waters, salmon and steelhead fishing, swimming, and kayaking opportunities. The area offers basic facilities including a vault toilet and garbage disposal from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is available. Campfires are permitted only in developed fire pits. Nearby trails include the Redwood Nature Trail through old-growth redwoods and the Chetco Gorge Trail along the river. Winter camping on the gravel bar is discouraged due to frequent high-water events that can flood the river bar. The maximum length of stay is 14 days, and quiet hours are enforced between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Directions
From Brookings, turn off US Highway 101 onto North Bank Chetco River Road (County Road 784). This becomes Forest Service Road 1376. Nook Bar is approximately 3 miles from the forest boundary on Forest Service Road 1376.
