About

Outlaw Cave Campground is located in the Middle Fork Powder River Recreation Area, a remote and rugged landscape of red walls and deep canyons that was a favorite hiding place of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. The area includes two caves and a corral historically used by outlaws to store their loot. The campground offers 12 rustic camping spaces in this scenic country where the Middle Fork of the Powder River, a 12-mile long blue-ribbon trout stretch, flows through dramatic canyon terrain. The area is an elk and deer winter forage range, making it popular with wildlife viewers and hunters. Prehistoric archaeological resources are located near the site and should not be collected or disturbed. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fee. One vault toilet is provided, but there is no water and no trash collection, so campers must pack out all garbage. Access to the campground requires traveling through the historic Hole-in-the-Wall ranch on Bar C Road, an improved all-weather road, though visitors should respect private property rights. The BLM recommends against venturing into this area during periods of inclement weather due to its remote location.

Directions

From Interstate 90, take exit 254 for Kaycee. Head west on Highway 191 for about 1 mile. Turn left onto Highway 190W for about 16 miles to Barnum. Turn left onto Bar C Road (sign for Middle Fork Powder River Management Area). This road is an improved all-weather access road and travels directly through the headquarters of the Hole-in-the-Wall ranch. Please respect private property rights and all posted signs. Follow it for about 7.8 miles to the campground.
