About
Ouabache State Park, pronounced O-bah-chee, is situated along the Wabash River near Bluffton in Wells County, Indiana. Originally established as Wells County State Forest and Game Preserve in the early 1930s, the area was once considered the "Greatest Wildlife Laboratory in the United States" for its wildlife management programs. Through the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration, the park was developed for wildlife management, forestry demonstration, and recreation. The campground features 122 electric sites across two loops, with most sites offering driveways between 39 and 51 feet. Sites are available year-round for advance reservations through the Indiana DNR system. The park also includes youth tent camping areas, picnic shelters, and a lodge recreation building. A dump station serves the campground, and modern comfort stations provide facilities for campers. Recreational opportunities include fishing at Kunkel Lake, a seasonal swimming beach, over six miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty, tennis and basketball courts, and a paved bicycle trail connecting to Bluffton. The park's signature attraction is a 20-acre American bison exhibit where visitors can observe these magnificent animals in a natural setting. An observation fire tower offers panoramic views of the property. During summer months, naturalist programs provide educational opportunities about the park's natural and cultural history.
