About

Old Virginia Group Horse Camp provides group equestrian camping just minutes from a large network of horse trails in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. This secluded, picturesque campground sits in the Fairwood Valley along a stream that flows into Fox Creek, surrounded by the rugged Appalachian Mountains of George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The campground can accommodate up to 25 guests and 25 horses, with parking for 6-15 horse trailers depending on their size. The primitive camping site features two large grassy fields with wooden picnic tables, fire rings, and hitching rails. Two portable toilets are provided, but no drinking water is available. Horses may drink from the stream. The campground is easily accessed from a paved road with a gravel driveway entrance. Old Virginia offers easy access to the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, which connects to the Iron Mountain Trail. From there, riders can access the Virginia Creeper Trail to the west (33.4 miles of scenery with about 100 trestles and bridges) or the New River Trail to the east. The picturesque mountain views and trickling sounds of the stream create a relaxing, serene environment. Horse owners need to have a current negative Coggins test certificate for horses taken to public places in Virginia. Reservations are required and must be made in advance through Recreation.gov.
