Elk Knob State Park

Closed

Campsites are closed until further notice due to damage from Hurricane Helene. A portion of the Backcountry Trail also remains closed. Nearby alternatives include Grandfather Mountain or New River state parks.

About

Elk Knob State Park protects one of the most significant peaks in the Amphibolite Mountains, rising to 5,520 feet with panoramic summit views. Established in 2003 to preserve the mountain and headwaters of the North Fork of the New River, the park offers a genuine backcountry camping experience in North Carolina's high country. The park has six individual primitive campsites available first-come, first-served: three standard sites accommodating up to six people and two tents each, plus a zone camping area with three additional sites. Two group sites for organized groups of 7-26 people require advance reservations. All sites require a 1-2 mile hike from the trailhead, and campers must be fully self-sufficient. This is true primitive camping with no potable water, no fire rings, and minimal facilities. Campfires are prohibited; cooking must be done on camp stoves. Group sites share a pit toilet, but individual backpack sites have no restroom facilities. Creek water is available but requires filtration or boiling for at least five minutes.
