Mount Jefferson State Natural Area
This is a day-use only park with no overnight camping. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset year-round. Summit restrooms are currently closed. For camping, visitors should use nearby New River State Park.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. * WHERE...Portions of North Carolina, including the following areas, Alleghany NC, Ashe, Surry, Watauga and Wilkes and southwest Virginia, including the following areas, Carroll, Floyd, Grayson and Patrick. * WHEN...From 11 AM EDT this morning through Sunday evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Upslope rainfall from a rather strong southeasterly Low level jet from the remnants of Isaias will bring increased precipitation along the crest of the southern Blue Ridge from Floyd county extending southwestward to Watauga county. Widespread rainfall totals of 2-4 inches with locally higher totals in the 5-6 range will be possible, especially for areas like Meadows of Dan, Boone, and Blowing Rock. These higher totals may lead to isolated instances of landslides along slopes that have been modified by humans like embankments or cut slopes. In West Virginia, Mercer, Summers, and Western Greenbrier Counties. * WHEN...From 5 PM this afternoon to 11 AM EDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strong easterly to southeasterly winds from the remnants of Isaias will move over the region today into Sunday, which may lead to downed trees and power poles and subsequently power outages across higher terrain locations from NW North Carolina to SE West Virginia.

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a day-use only park located on the US 221 Bypass between Jefferson and West Jefferson in Ashe County, approximately 25 miles northeast of Boone. The park does not have overnight camping facilities. There are no campsites, and visitors looking to camp in the area should plan to stay at nearby New River State Park instead. The park features approximately 5 miles of hiking trails leading to scenic overlooks with views extending as far as Tennessee. Luther Rock is a popular destination within the park. Over 700 plant species thrive here, including the Dutchman's pipevine which attracts the beautiful swallowtail butterfly. Day-use amenities include a reservable picnic shelter and restroom facilities at the summit (though summit restrooms may be temporarily closed). Park access is free, with hours from 8 a.m. to sunset daily throughout the year. The park is closed only on Christmas Day.
