About
Old Kuttawa Recreation Area sits on the northern shores of Lake Barkley, near the narrow canal connecting it to Kentucky Lake. Together, these two massive reservoirs create one of the premier freshwater recreation destinations in the country. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Old Kuttawa provides an ideal setting for group gatherings, picnics, and water-based activities. The recreation area offers two large group picnic shelters with electricity, an amphitheater available by reservation, flush restrooms, and paved parking. A protected sandy swimming beach provides access to Lake Barkley's warm summer waters, while a playground and basketball and volleyball courts offer additional recreation options. Day use fees apply for the beach and facilities. The half-mile Anderson Woodland Trail is an enjoyable footpath perfect for birding and viewing the region's impressive tall hardwood trees. This is a day-use facility only; no overnight camping is available. For overnight camping on Lake Barkley, visitors should consider nearby USACE campgrounds such as Canal, Eureka, or Hurricane Creek.
