Old Job Shelter

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Forest Road 30 access may be closed or difficult to navigate during winter and spring mud season.

About

Old Job Shelter is a historic backcountry shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Green Mountain National Forest. Located in the Mount Tabor area within the Robert T. Stafford White Rocks National Recreation Area, the shelter sits near the site of what was once the village of Griffith, also known as the old job logging camp. The three-sided shelter provides basic overnight accommodations for hikers and backpackers exploring the trail system. The shelter is accessed by hiking the Old Job Trail south from Forest Road 30. The trail crosses a plateau above Lake Brook before descending through the woods, reaching a spur trail to the shelter at approximately 0.7 miles from the trailhead. Water can be filtered or treated from nearby natural sources. A composting toilet is available at the site. This is a primitive, first-come, first-served backcountry camping site with no reservations and no fees. Visitors should be prepared for backcountry conditions and practice Leave No Trace principles. Note that Forest Road 30 may be closed during winter months and can be difficult to access during mud season in spring.

Directions

From Mount Tabor, take Forest Road 30 to the trailhead parking area. Hike south on the Old Job Trail. The shelter spur trail appears at approximately 0.7 miles on the right.
