About

Old Job Shelter is a primitive three-sided backcountry shelter located in the Robert T. Stafford White Rocks National Recreation Area within the Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter sits in an extensive clearing at the site of the former Griffith logging village, offering a glimpse into Vermont's timber heritage. The Old Job Trail follows what was once the lowland route of the Appalachian Trail before it was rerouted over the mountains. The shelter is reached via a short spur trail about 0.7 miles from the main Old Job Trail. Access to the trailhead is from the end of USFS Road 30 in Mount Tabor. To reach the trailhead, follow USFS Road 10/Brooklyn Road east from US-7 in Danby for approximately 6.9 miles, passing the Long Trail crossing, then turn right onto USFS Road 30 and continue 2.3 miles to the end. As a backcountry shelter, amenities are minimal. A composting toilet is available nearby. Water must be obtained from nearby natural sources and treated or filtered before drinking. The shelter is free to use on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum stay of two consecutive nights.

Directions
