About

Peru Peak Shelter is a classic backcountry shelter situated in the Peru Peak Wilderness within Green Mountain National Forest, accessible only by foot via the Appalachian Trail/Long Trail. Originally built earlier, the current structure was rebuilt in 1979 by the Youth Conservation Corps and U.S. Forest Service. The three-sided Adirondack-style shelter typically accommodates 6-10 hikers and is shared on a first-come, first-served basis. The site includes tent platforms nearby for overflow camping when the shelter is full, which is common during peak hiking season. Amenities are minimal: a composting toilet (privy) and a water source that requires treatment before drinking. The Green Mountain Club partners with the USFS to provide caretakers at this high-use site during peak season to maintain facilities and educate visitors. The shelter sits along the AT/LT corridor that crosses the southern portion of Peru Peak Wilderness, taking in the summits of Peru Peak and Styles Peak, both exceeding 3,000 feet. Hikers should bring their own tent as backup since shelter space cannot be guaranteed, and plan to stay no more than two consecutive nights.
