About
Bromley Shelter is a backcountry hiking shelter located on the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail in Green Mountain National Forest near Peru, Vermont. The shelter sits approximately 2 miles north of the Route 11/30 trailhead via the Appalachian Trail. Built to replace the former Mad Tom Notch Shelter, this structure was designed based on similar shelters found further south on the Appalachian Trail. The shelter features a composting toilet and access to water from nearby sources that must be treated or filtered before consumption. As a typical AT/Long Trail shelter, it operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations or fees required. Hikers should plan to bring a tent or tarp as backup shelter, particularly during peak hiking season when shelters frequently fill to capacity. The shelter is accessible year-round for experienced backcountry users willing to hike in during winter conditions. Winter access requires proper preparation for snow and cold temperatures typical of Vermont's Green Mountains. Dispersed camping is also allowed in the surrounding national forest provided campers stay at least 200 feet from trails and water sources.
Directions
From Route 11/30, park at the Appalachian Trail trailhead parking area. Hike north on the Appalachian Trail for approximately 2 miles. A spur trail leads to the shelter.
