About

Little Rock Pond Shelter & Tent Area offers a quintessential backcountry camping experience on Vermont's iconic Long Trail/Appalachian Trail corridor. The 18-acre spring-fed pond is surrounded by forested hills and large boulders, creating a picturesque setting for overnight hikers. The shelter and tenting area are located at the south end of the pond, where a Green Mountain Club caretaker resides during the peak hiking season. The site provides a three-sided shelter capable of accommodating around 12 people, along with five wooden tent platforms for those who prefer tenting. A batch-bin composting privy is available for solid waste. Water is not provided and must be treated or filtered from the pond or nearby streams. The pond is stocked annually with brook trout, making it a popular destination for backcountry anglers. Access requires a hike of approximately 2 miles from the trailhead parking area on Forest Road 10 near Danby. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. An overnight fee of $5 per person applies, with Interagency Senior/Access passes providing a 50% discount. Payment should be made with cash or check to the on-site caretaker.

Directions

From Route 7 in Danby, turn east onto Brooklyn Rd (Forest Road 10). Take FR 10 for approximately 3.5 miles to the AT/Long Trail crossing. The parking area is on the south side of the road. From the trailhead, hike approximately 2 miles on the Long Trail to reach the shelter and tent area at the south end of the pond.
