...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Lost Pond Shelter is a backcountry overnight shelter located along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the coincident Long Trail in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. Situated within the Big Branch Wilderness and the Robert T. Stafford White Rocks National Recreation Area near Mount Tabor, this primitive shelter offers through-hikers and backpackers a place to rest during their journey. The shelter is typical of Long Trail shelters: a three-sided Adirondack-style structure that can accommodate approximately 6-10 hikers. Amenities are minimal by design. A composting toilet is available, and water can be obtained from nearby sources but must be treated or filtered before drinking. There is no potable water, trash service, or other developed facilities. Access is via a roughly 3-mile hike south on the Appalachian Trail from Forest Road 10 in Mount Tabor. The shelter operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations or fees. Use is limited to two consecutive nights to ensure availability for through-hikers.
