Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:35PM EDT by NWS Burlington VT
...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!
About
Greenwall Shelter is a primitive backcountry shelter situated on the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail within Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter is accessed via a short spur trail from the main trail corridor in the White Rocks area. As a typical Long Trail shelter, it features a three-sided wooden structure with an open front facing away from prevailing weather, providing basic overnight protection for approximately 6 hikers. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted and no fees charged. A composting privy is located nearby. Water is available from a nearby stream source but must be filtered or treated before drinking. During drier conditions, hikers may need to follow the streambed downstream to find pools or obtain water from cascades further along the trail. This shelter is part of a network of shelters spaced a moderate day's hike apart along the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail through Vermont. Stays are limited to two consecutive nights. Small wood fires using dead or downed wood are permitted on this federal land following Leave No Trace principles.
Directions
Access via White Rocks Picnic Area trailhead. The shelter is reached by hiking approximately 2 miles on the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail, then 0.2 miles on a blue-blazed spur trail.
