About

Island Creek Park, also known as Island Creek Wounded Warrior Park, is a day-use recreation area located on John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake) in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Established through a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, the park emphasizes accessible outdoor recreation. The park features a handicap-accessible picnic shelter with electricity and vault toilets, along with a covered, handicap-accessible fishing dock equipped with accessible boat boarding gates. The fairly open, non-wooded setting near Island Creek Dam provides lakeside views, though natural shade is limited. John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000-acre lake with 800 miles of wooded shoreline offering excellent fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. The surrounding public lands support hunting, wildlife viewing, and access to 26 wildlife management areas. Island Creek Park is located approximately 15 miles south of Clarksville, Virginia, where visitors can find shopping, gas, and groceries. The park operates seasonally, with the 2026 reservation window temporarily closed until March 4, 2026. Alcoholic beverages, camping, and hunting are prohibited within the park. Dogs are permitted on a maximum 6-foot leash.
