About

Longwood Park Picnic Shelter sits on the shores of John H. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, a 50,000-acre reservoir created by the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. The reservoir extends 39 miles along the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River across Virginia and North Carolina, with over 800 miles of shoreline stretching across six counties and two states. The forested park setting on the Grassy Creek part of Kerr Reservoir provides ample shade and scenic lake views. The reservoir is widely recognized for excellent fishing opportunities, including largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and flathead catfish. The 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake offer year-round opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and birding. Public lands are open to hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, quail, dove, squirrel, rabbit, and waterfowl including wood duck and Canadian geese. Longwood Park is conveniently located just 10 minutes from Clarksville, Virginia, where shopping, gas, and groceries are available. The Clarksville Marina is approximately 15 minutes away by highway or 30 minutes by water. The park provides easy access to one of Virginia's premier outdoor recreation destinations.
