About
Occoneechee State Park Equestrian Campground provides year-round access to one of Virginia's premier equestrian trail systems on the shores of the 48,000-acre John H. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. The campground offers 11 spacious pull-through campsites, each measuring 100 by 24 feet with gravel driveways and 50-amp electrical pedestals. Sites can accommodate horse trailers up to 65 feet in length. Eleven covered 12x12-foot horse stalls are available and must be rented alongside a campsite reservation. The park features 22 miles of trails, with the Beaver Pond Trail and Panhandle Trail designated as multi-use routes open to horseback riding, hiking, and biking. Potable water is accessible at two central fill stations for storage tanks, and Site 1 includes an ADA-compliant individual water hookup. Vault toilets serve the equestrian area; there is no bathhouse or showers at this campground. A dump station is available elsewhere in the park. Reservations can be made through reservevaparks.com or by calling 1-800-933-PARK. Reservations made more than 30 days in advance require at least one horse stall rental per site. Virginia state law requires visitors to carry a copy of a negative Coggins report for all horses. Check-in is 2 p.m. and check-out is 1 p.m., with maximum occupancy of six people per site.
