Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground

Nestled in Rice County's rolling terrain, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park preserves a rare fragment of the Big Woods that once covered much of south-central Minnesota. The campground sits within this old-growth maple-basswood forest, offering 51 drive-in sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 60 feet. Twenty-seven sites feature 30-amp electric hookups, while the remaining 24 are non-electric. Four walk-in sites and three group sites provide additional options for backpackers and larger parties. The campground's seasonal amenities operate from early May through mid-October, including a modern shower building with eight hot-water showers, flush toilets, potable water, and a dump station. Each campsite includes a fire ring with grill and picnic table. A playground and overflow parking round out the facilities. The park's trail system connects campers to Hidden Falls, a 50-foot cascade that's especially impressive during spring snowmelt and after heavy rains. Beyond camping, the park is renowned for its spring wildflower displays, including the dwarf trout lily found nowhere else on Earth. The 1,280-acre park offers over 13 miles of hiking trails through mature hardwood forest that blazes with color in autumn.
