Afton State Park Day Use Facilities

Open

Day-use facilities are open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a day-use area only; no overnight camping. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required ($7 daily or $35 annual).

About

Located along the scenic St. Croix River southeast of the Twin Cities, the Day Use Facilities at Afton State Park provide picnic grounds for day visitors. The lower picnic area, about a half-mile walk from the parking lot, features a shelter, fire rings, and pedestal grills with access to a shallow swimming beach. Additional picnic tables are scattered throughout the park. The visitor center near the main parking area offers modern restrooms, a kitchen area, and gathering space. In winter it serves as a trail center for cross-country skiers and snowshoers, with snowshoe rentals available. The park encompasses 1,700 acres of restored prairie, oak savanna, and wooded ravines with 20 miles of trails. This facility is for day use only. Overnight camping at Afton State Park requires hiking to the backpack campground located on the bluffs, approximately one mile from the parking area. Camper cabins and yurts are also available separately.
