About

Afton State Park provides one of the closest backcountry camping experiences to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. The 27 backpack campsites are scattered across the park's distinctive landscape of blufftop prairies, deep ravines, and oak forests overlooking the scenic St. Croix River. Getting to your site requires packing your gear up a hill for nearly a mile, but the reward is a peaceful night away from road noise and crowds. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with grill grate. Some sites feature raised gravel tent pads. Drinking water is available from a solar-powered pump centrally located in the camping area. Vault toilets serve the campground, while flush toilets are only available at the Visitor Center near the parking area. There are no showers or electrical hookups. Beyond backpack camping, the park offers four camper cabins, two yurts, one wall tent, and two group camping areas. The park features over 20 miles of hiking trails, a swimming beach on the St. Croix River, and a visitor center with interpretive displays. A four-mile paved trail connects the park entrance to the visitor center.
