About
Mud Lake Campground sits at 7,100 feet elevation in the Anthony Lakes Recreation Area within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. This intimate 7-site campground is the smallest of three campgrounds in the area, located directly across from the Anthony Lake Ski Area along the scenic Forest Road 73. The sites vary from those nestled beneath dense pine and fir forest to others in open meadow settings, offering picturesque views of Gunsight Peak and the Elkhorn Mountains after a short hike across the byway. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding recreation opportunities. Campers have access to all activities at nearby Anthony Lake, including boating, canoeing, kayaking, and trout fishing via an accessible boat ramp. The area features extensive trail networks, including the 22.6-mile Elkhorn Crest Trail and 1-mile Black Lake Trail for hiking and horseback riding, plus the 1-mile Shoreline Trail around Anthony Lake for hiking only. Mountain bikers can enjoy over 8 miles of single track trails and a downhill flow trail at the ski area. Mud Lake itself, located near the campground, often dries up during late summer months but provides opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography when water levels are sufficient. The campground accommodates small to mid-sized trailers and tent camping, with six sites offering electric hookups and one non-electric site. The facility operates along the 106-mile Elkhorn Scenic Byway, which winds through the Elkhorn Mountains past ghost towns and numerous lakes and rivers. The high elevation provides comfortable temperatures during the hottest summer months while offering stunning alpine scenery and abundant wildflowers.
