Air Quality Alert issued June 7 at 1:04PM CDT by NWS Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN
* WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for ozone pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. * WHERE...Southern, central, and western Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 11 PM CDT Tonight. * IMPACTS...Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, children and older adults, and people who are active outdoors, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Ground-level ozone is expected to be high Saturday and Sunday afternoon across much of Minnesota. Mostly sunny skies, warm temperatures, and low humidity will provide a favorable environment for two types of pollutants (volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides) to react with sunlight in the air to produce ground-level ozone. The ozone levels will decrease after sunset Saturday and be lower Sunday morning before increasing again Sunday afternoon. Consider moving outdoor activities outside of the afternoon hours.
About
The Riverside Group Camp at William O'Brien State Park provides an ideal setting for family reunions, Scout troops, and other organized groups seeking rustic camping along the scenic St. Croix River. Located approximately one hour north of the Twin Cities near Marine on St. Croix, this group campground accommodates up to 50 campers in a natural riverside setting. Group campsites include picnic tables, fire rings with grills, water access, and vault toilets. As a primitive group camping area, modern shower facilities are not provided at the group camp itself. The park underwent extensive accessibility improvements completed in May 2025, making William O'Brien the first Minnesota state park to receive whole-park accessibility upgrades. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance online or by calling the DNR reservation center. The group campground typically operates from mid-May through October. Only approved firewood is permitted, and pets must be leashed and attended at all times.
Directions
From the Twin Cities, head north on Interstate 35E to Highway 97, then east to Highway 95. Follow Highway 95 north; the park entrance is located two miles north of Marine on St. Croix on Highway 95.
