About
Afton State Park Campground is a unique hike-in camping destination located on the rolling bluffs above the St. Croix River in Washington County. The 28 backpacking campsites are reached via a challenging 0.75 to 1.25-mile uphill hike from the parking area, making this strictly a carry-in, carry-out experience with no vehicle access. The campground sits amid restored native prairie and oak savanna, offering spectacular views of the St. Croix River valley from many sites. The main trail through the campground traverses native prairie restoration and provides stunning overlooks. Sites range from open prairie settings with expansive views to partially shaded spots mixing sun and trees. Firewood is available at a central location within the campground, though campers must cut it themselves. Water is provided via a solar-powered pump centrally located in the camping area. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Beyond camping, the park offers 20 miles of hiking trails through diverse habitats including prairies, oak woodlands, and deep ravines. A popular riverside trail follows nearly three miles of old railroad bed to a swimming beach and picnic area along the St. Croix. The park is accessible from the Twin Cities metro area and provides a true backcountry experience within easy reach of urban areas.
