Moon Lake Guard Station
The Guard Station is currently closed for the season. It typically operates from late May through September. Water is unavailable for the 2026 season due to debris flow damage in 2023; a new water system is being installed. Guests must call the District Office at (435) 738-2482 three days prior to confirm lock combination.

About
Moon Lake Guard Station is a historic Forest Service cabin available for overnight rental near the shores of the two-mile-long Moon Lake in Ashley National Forest. Situated at 8,000 feet elevation on the southern slope of the 13,000-foot Uinta Mountains, the cabin is surrounded by lodgepole pine, aspen, and Douglas fir. The setting offers cool mountain air and serves as one of the primary gateways to the High Uintas Wilderness. The cabin sleeps a maximum of four guests with one twin bunk bed and one queen bed (no linens provided). Amenities include flush toilet, shower, wood stove for heating, and electric lights with modern appliances. Level parking accommodates up to two vehicles. No tent or RV camping is permitted on site, and campfires are not allowed. Recreation opportunities abound with Moon Lake offering excellent fishing for tiger trout, rainbow, cutthroat, brook trout, kokanee salmon, splake, and arctic grayling. The Lake Fork Trail and Brown Duck Mountain Loop provide hiking and equestrian access into the wilderness. The adjacent Moon Lake Resort offers boat rentals, and Flying J Outfitters provides guided horse rides and pack trips.
Directions
From Duchesne, Utah take State Hwy 87 north for 15.5 miles. Turn north on Hwy 134 toward Mountain Home, then continue north to the Forest Boundary and Forest Road 131. Follow Road 131 for five miles to Moon Lake Campground. Go straight into Moon Lake Campground and take Lower Campground Loop; just past site #44 and Yield sign turn right. Park in assigned parking spots as you approach the cabin. The cabin is about 32 miles from Duchesne on paved roads.
