About
Monture Guard Station sits in the Lolo National Forest about 8 miles north of Ovando, Montana at an elevation of 4,200 feet. This completely restored ranger station facility offers comfortable accommodations with propane heating, a well-equipped kitchen area, and refinished wood floors. The two-story cabin sleeps up to 8 people with beds and mattresses on the second floor, and features a large dining table with 10 chairs. The cabin is available only in winter from December 1 through April 14, and guests must access it via a one-mile journey from the plowed parking area by skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. A system of groomed trails surrounds the cabin and nearby Seeley Lake, providing excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The surrounding forest is home to diverse wildlife including mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, grizzly and black bears, bald and golden eagles, trumpeter swans, and herons. Food storage orders are in effect to prevent bear encounters. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, food, drinking water, garbage bags, and toilet paper, and must pack out all trash.
Directions
From Clearwater Junction (Highway 83 and Highway 200), travel east on Highway 200 for approximately 13 miles. Turn north (left) onto Forest Service Road 89/Monture Road (across from the turnoff to Ovando). Continue for 8 miles and park in the plowed parking area on the west side of the road. Cross the bridge over Monture Creek and stay right for approximately one mile to reach the cabin. The winter entrance is on the rear (east side) of the cabin.
