Located just three miles east of Montpelier, Idaho on Highway 89, Montpelier Canyon Campground offers a peaceful setting along Montpelier Creek at 6,400 feet elevation. The campground features 15 family sites, including two designated tent-only sites, nestled within dense willow stands that provide natural shelter from nearby traffic noise. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, this rustic campground maintains its historic character while providing access to excellent outdoor recreation. Anglers can fish for rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout directly in Montpelier Creek, while Montpelier Reservoir is just five miles away offering expanded fishing, boating, and canoeing opportunities with a boat ramp. The campground serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding national forest and nearby attractions. Beautiful Bear Lake, straddling the Utah-Idaho border, is within a 35-minute drive and provides endless opportunities for water sports, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle riding. The campground's gravel roads and parking spurs are tight and not suitable for large vehicles or big rigs. During peak season, vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during peak season from late May through early September, with a modest nightly fee. Outside the peak season, the campground remains accessible with no fees but also no water or toilet services.
