Emigration Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Typically operates late May through early September with reservations available. Outside the operating season, the campground is open first-come, first-served with no fee, toilets, or water.

About

Emigration Campground is situated along the banks of Emigration Creek, approximately 17 miles west of Montpelier, Idaho, in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Located just off State Highway 36 in Emigration Canyon at an elevation of about 6,400 feet, the campground offers a peaceful setting surrounded by dense stands of pine, spruce, and aspen trees. The campground features 20 single-family sites, three double-family sites, and two group sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are available during the operating season. Summer wildflowers dot the landscape, and wild huckleberries are abundant in mid-August, providing a scenic and natural camping experience. The Highline National Recreation Trail is adjacent to the campground and is considered the premier trail of the Montpelier District. This 55-mile trail stretches along the backbone of the Bear River Range and is open to hikers, bikers, horseback riders, motorcyclists, and off-road vehicle riders. The trail intersects many other trails, providing excellent opportunities to explore the rugged, scenic surroundings. Fishing is available on local streams, and the area offers diverse recreational activities throughout the summer season.

Directions

From Montpelier, drive west on U.S. Highway 89 to Ovid, Idaho. At the junction of U.S. 89 and State Highway 36, take the right fork of the Y onto State Highway 36 and travel approximately 12 miles northwest to the campground. A left turn is required to enter the campground.
