Moccasin Gap

Closed

Currently closed. A forest order restricts horse-related activities at Moccasin Gap Horse Camp through December 31, 2026. Trail damage from heavy rains has made portions of the trail system impassable. Contact the Forest Supervisor's Office at (479) 964-7200 for current conditions.

About

Located in the heart of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest in Pope County, Moccasin Gap serves as a base camp for one of Arkansas's most celebrated multi-use trail systems. The 28-mile network consists of four interconnected loop trails winding through mixed hardwood and pine forest, crossing numerous streams and passing small waterfalls. While primarily developed for equestrian use and frequently hosting competitive rides, the trails welcome mountain bikers, hikers, and OHV users on designated sections. The campground provides 17 primitive camping spurs suitable for horse trailers and standard camping. Facilities include vault toilets and a picnic pavilion available for reservation. The area operates on a first-come, first-served basis with on-site payment via the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay app or cash/check. Downloading the Recreation.gov mobile app before arrival is recommended due to limited cellular service in this remote forest setting.

Directions

From Russellville, take Arkansas Highway 7 north for approximately 25 miles. The trail and campground are located on the west side of the road.
