Petaga Campground is the more developed of two campgrounds at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, located on the southwest corner of Mille Lacs Lake. The campground features 22 electric sites and 19 non-electric sites set among tall shade trees, providing a comfortable woodland camping experience. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill for cooking. A shower building serves campers, and an RV sanitation station is available in the park. The park sits at the headwaters of the Rum River, which flows 145 miles south to the Mississippi. The slow current makes it ideal for family canoe outings, with rental canoes and kayaks available at the Rum River access area. Mille Lacs Kathio preserves over 10,000 years of human history, including ancient copper artifacts and wild rice harvesting traditions of the Ojibwe people. Beyond camping, the park offers over 35 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The 100-foot observation tower near Ogechie Lake provides panoramic views of the surrounding forests and wetlands. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on designated trails.
