About
Petaga Campground is one of two campgrounds at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, offering 41 well-spaced wooded campsites near the historic Rum River. The campground provides both electric and non-electric camping options in a shaded setting with tall trees. Twenty-two electric sites include three pull-through sites and two ADA-accessible sites, while 19 non-electric sites offer a more rustic experience. All campsites include picnic tables and fire rings. The campground features modern amenities including a shower building with flush toilets, and five camper cabins are located within the campground area for year-round use. The nearby Rum River access offers canoe and kayak rentals for paddling the slow-moving river, ideal for family outings and fishing. The campground provides convenient access to the park's extensive trail system, swimming beach, interpretive center, and the iconic 100-foot observation tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding forest and Mille Lacs Lake. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is a National Historic Landmark preserving 9,000 years of human history, with interpretive trails highlighting Dakota and Ojibwe cultural sites. The park offers year-round recreation including hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and horseback riding on varied terrain through forests, wetlands, and along lakeshores.
