Equestrian Campground - Horse Required

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground typically operates during warmer months when trails are accessible for horseback riding.

About

The Equestrian Campground at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park offers 10 rustic sites exclusively for campers with horses. This specialized campground provides direct access to the park's extensive 30-mile trail system, perfect for horseback riding through wooded terrain steeped in 9,000 years of human history. The campground sits adjacent to the Landmark Trail loop, which features many of the park's historic sites, and near the 100-foot observation tower offering views across to Mille Lacs Lake. As a rustic facility, the equestrian campground has no hookups, restrooms, or drinking water on-site. Campers must bring their own water and be prepared for primitive camping conditions. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table in a wooded setting. The park's main campgrounds with shower facilities are located elsewhere in the park. This campground serves riders looking to explore Kathio's diverse landscape, from archaeological sites to scenic forests, all accessible on horseback.

Directions

From Onamia, Minnesota, take US Highway 169 north for approximately 8 miles. Turn left onto Kathio State Park Road and continue for about 1 mile to reach the park entrance.
