Mill Springs Mill Shelter
Closed — Currently closed for the season. Operates as a day-use facility only during the recreation season with no overnight camping permitted.
Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 11:11AM EDT by NWS Jackson KY
Low humidity, sunny to mostly sunny skies, unseasonably warm temperatures, very dry fuels, and breezy conditions will combine to result in Elevated Fire Danger this afternoon into early evening. Humidities will slowly recover but winds are forecast to persist through the overnight. Burning is not recommended as wildfire behavior could become erratic. Remember that Kentucky regulations make it illegal to burn between the hours of 6 AM and 6 PM within 150 feet of a woodland or brushland during the Spring Forest Fire Season that runs until April 30th.
About
Mill Springs Mill Shelter is a scenic day-use facility located on the shores of Lake Cumberland, overlooking the main body of the lake. The site is home to Mill Springs Mill, a historic water-powered grist mill built in 1877 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill's 40-foot overshot water wheel is one of the largest in the world and probably the largest water wheel currently operating. The mill and water wheel were restored as a bicentennial project in 1976 and are now operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an interpretive demonstration. Tours of the mill are conducted for the public during the recreation season. The facility offers a small reservable group picnic shelter with electricity, along with six individual picnic sites equipped with tables and grills. Flush toilets, drinking water, and a courtesy tie-up boat slip are available for visitors. While visiting the mill, guests can also tour the historic Brown-Lanier house (ca.1830-1860), the Miller's home that was used as headquarters and hospital during the Civil War battle of Mill Springs. Lake Cumberland provides abundant recreational opportunities including fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, white and Kentucky bass, bluegill, crappie, rockfish, and walleye. Conley Bottom Marina is located 10 minutes away with additional amenities including a campground, boat rentals, restaurant and general store. It is important to note that Mill Springs Mill Shelter is strictly a day-use facility and no overnight camping is permitted in the area.
