About

Mill Springs Mill Shelter is a day-use recreation area operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the shores of Lake Cumberland in Wayne County, Kentucky. The centerpiece is a historic water-powered grist mill built in 1877 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill's 40-foot overshot water wheel is one of the largest in the world and possibly the largest currently operating. Restored as a bicentennial project in 1976, the Corps conducts public mill tours during the recreation season. The day-use area offers a reservable group picnic shelter and six individual picnic sites equipped with tables and grills. Amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, and a courtesy tie-up boat slip for boaters arriving from the lake. No overnight camping is permitted at this location. Nearby attractions include the historic Brown-Lanier House (ca. 1830-1860), which served as headquarters and hospital during the Civil War Battle of Mill Springs. For overnight camping options, Conley Bottom Marina is approximately 10 minutes away with a campground, boat rentals, restaurant, and general store.
