Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 4:55AM EDT by NWS State College PA
The combination of drying fine fuels and leaf litter, low relative humidity of around 35 percent and a southerly wind gusting between 20 and 25 mph during the late morning and afternoon hours, will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread across the southern half of Pennsylvania today. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly. For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire prevention and education, please visit the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website at http://dcnr.pa.gov/Communities/Wildfire.
About
Memorial Lake State Park encompasses 230 acres near the base of Blue Mountain in East Hanover Township, Lebanon County. Established in 1931 to honor Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers who served and died in World War I and II, the park is completely surrounded by Fort Indiantown Gap, the headquarters for the Pennsylvania Army and Air National Guard. The park is located 30 minutes northeast of Harrisburg and is easily accessible from Interstate 81. The centerpiece of the park is the 85-acre Memorial Lake, which provides excellent opportunities for boating and fishing. Two boat launching ramps and a courtesy dock serve visitors with personal watercraft, while 56 overnight mooring spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Boat rentals are available seasonally, including kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and rowboats. Only electric motors are permitted on the lake, making it particularly popular for sailboating and sailboarding. Anglers can fish for warm-water species from shore or by boat, with a fishing pier available for easy access. Memorial Lake State Park is a day-use facility and does not offer overnight camping. The park features picnic areas with tables and grills, two reservable pavilions with electrical service, a beach area, playground, and sports fields. Hiking trails provide opportunities to explore the natural surroundings, and the park is an excellent location for birdwatching, particularly during migratory seasons when more than 100 different land and water species can be observed. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, providing a convenient destination for outdoor recreation throughout all seasons.
