About

McCrea Bridge Campground is located on the backwaters of Island Park Reservoir in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest at 6,200 feet elevation. The campground sits within the Island Park Caldera, an area of extinct volcanic activity characterized by dense lodgepole pine forests and broad meadows with summer wildflowers. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills, with lodgepole pines providing partial shade. A paved road accesses the campground, with gravel interior roads and parking spurs. Island Park Reservoir offers boating, water skiing, fishing, and canoeing, with a boat ramp located within the campground. Because the reservoir is used for irrigation, water levels recede throughout the summer and by August, the reservoir typically cannot be accessed from McCrea Bridge. The Island Park area is renowned for fishing, particularly on Henry's Fork, considered one of the best fly-fishing streams in the nation for rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout, plus Kokanee salmon. The area provides access to numerous trails including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and Nez Perce Trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Wildlife is abundant, including black and grizzly bears, moose, elk, deer, bald eagles, and Sandhill cranes. Nearby attractions include Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (12 miles south), Harriman State Park (14 miles south), Henry's Lake State Park (16 miles north), and Yellowstone National Park's west entrance (29 miles north).

Directions

From West Yellowstone, Montana, take Highway 20 south for 27 miles. Turn west at Elk Creek Service Station and travel 2 miles to the campground entrance.
