About

Big Springs Group Area is located in Island Park, Idaho, a region composed of two extinct volcanic calderas. The campground sits in a clearing surrounded by dense lodgepole pine forest at 6,300 feet elevation, with grassy meadows that burst with wildflowers in summer. The site is adjacent to Big Springs, one of the largest springs in the United States, which forms the headwaters of Henry's Fork. This stretch of river is considered one of the finest fly-fishing streams in the nation, with abundant rainbow and brook trout. The Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail begins near the campground and offers a leisurely 3-4 hour, 4.5-mile float to Macks Inn through crystal-clear water and beautiful scenery. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with frequent sightings of moose, elk, deer, black and grizzly bears, bald eagles, and Sandhill cranes. The historic Johnny Sack Cabin is nearby, open to visitors mid-June through Labor Day. Island Park serves as a gateway to world-class recreation. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are within a short drive. The area features hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and OHV use, including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Island Park Reservoir and Henry's Lake offer additional boating, water skiing, and fishing opportunities. Macks Inn, 4.5 miles west, provides boat rentals, shuttle service, and supplies.

Directions

From West Yellowstone, Montana, travel 22 miles south on Highway 20 to Macks Inn. Turn east on Big Springs Loop Road and travel 4.5 miles to the campground.
