About
McCarthy Beach State Park Group Campground sits on a forested bluff above Big Sturgeon Lake in Minnesota's Iron Range country. The site is positioned between the park's main picnic area and the boat landing, giving groups easy access to both day-use facilities and water recreation. A log building provides shelter for group activities, while the surrounding woods offer ample space for tent camping. This is a rustic camping experience with vault toilets and water spigots but no showers or electrical hookups. Each site has access to picnic tables and fire rings with grills. The campground is primarily designed for tent camping, though small trailers may fit between the trees. The nearby main beach features an accessible restroom building with changing rooms and showers for those who want modern facilities. The park encompasses over 2,500 acres of lakes, forests, and wetlands typical of the northern Minnesota landscape. Swimming at the main beach, fishing for walleye and northern pike in Sturgeon Lake, and hiking the park's trail system are popular activities. The group camp's location on the bluff provides excellent sunset views over the lake.
