About

Bugbee Canyon is a remote primitive campground tucked into a scenic canyon on the northwest shore of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in the Texas Panhandle. Located near the small Bugbee community off FM 3395, this free first-come, first-served area offers a quiet escape for campers seeking solitude and connection to the high plains landscape. The canyon provides excellent shoreline fishing access when lake levels permit, along with diverse birding opportunities among the shoreline habitat. Facilities are basic: vault-evaporator toilets and picnic tables are provided, but there is no drinking water, so campers must bring their own supply. Campfires are permitted only in existing fire rings and elevated grills. The access road through Bugbee Canyon is unpaved, requiring extra caution. During rainy conditions, areas near the shore can become soft, making it important to drive carefully when leaving paved roads. Trailers and RVs are technically allowed, though the primitive conditions and road access make this area better suited to tent camping and smaller rigs. Camping is limited to 14 consecutive days within a 30-day period, with a maximum of 60 days per year.
