About
Masse Homestead Individual Backpacking Sites offer a primitive backcountry camping experience along the North Country Trail within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The three hike-in sites are clustered together at the base of the Grand Sable Dunes on the south side, protected from wind by dense forest cover. This location provides access to the dramatic dune landscape while maintaining a secluded, wilderness atmosphere. Facilities are minimal: there is one shared fire ring for all three sites and bear-proof food storage lockers. There is no toilet at this campground and no water source, so campers must bring all drinking water and pack out all trash. Each individual site accommodates 1-6 people with a maximum of three tents or hammocks. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round. The campground's position at the dune base offers opportunities for exploring the Grand Sable Dunes, one of the largest freshwater dune systems in the world. The nearby Lakeshore Trail connects to other backcountry campgrounds spaced 2-5 miles apart along the 42-mile route.
