About

Masse Homestead Backpacking Sites is a primitive backcountry campground located at the base of the dunes on the south side within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground features three closely spaced individual sites sheltered by a thick forest canopy. Each individual site accommodates 1-6 people with a maximum of two tents or hammocks. The campground has one shared fire ring and food storage boxes to protect from wildlife, but no toilet facilities. Campers must bring their own water as no water source is available on-site. The campground is accessible only by hiking along the North Country Trail, part of the 42-mile Lakeshore Trail system that connects fourteen backcountry campgrounds at two to five mile intervals. The location offers solitude in a forested setting near the park's signature sand dunes and Lake Superior shoreline. All trash must be packed out, and campers must follow Leave No Trace principles, disposing of human waste at least 200 feet from trails, campsites, or water sources in a hole at least six inches deep.

Directions

Accessible only by hiking along the North Country Trail within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground is located along the Lakeshore Trail system between Munising and Grand Marais. Trailhead access points and parking are available at various locations along County Road H-58. Private shuttle services are available to facilitate point-to-point hiking.
