About

Grand Sable Lake Boat-In Site provides a unique backcountry camping experience on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, accessible only by canoe, kayak, or small motorboat (50 HP limit on lake). Established in 2008 per the park's General Management Plan, this single campsite offers quiet solitude on the east shore of Grand Sable Lake, roughly half a mile south of the boat launch. The setting features views of the Grand Sable Dunes and surrounding forest. The site includes essential backcountry amenities: one fire ring for campfires, a seasonal vault toilet, a bear-resistant food storage locker, and a designated boat landing. Water is available from Grand Sable Lake but must be boiled for one full minute or filtered through a one-micron filter before drinking. Campers must pack out all trash and follow Leave No Trace principles. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round and must be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov. The site accommodates a maximum of 6 people with 2 tents, and stays are limited to 3 consecutive nights. Check-in is at 1:00 PM and checkout by 12:00 PM.

Directions

Launch from the Grand Sable Lake boat launch, located approximately 3 miles southwest of Grand Marais off H-58. Paddle east along the shoreline for about half a mile to reach the campsite on the lake's east shore.
