About

Mason Neck State Park, situated just 20 miles south of Washington, D.C., is a 1,856-acre day-use park on a scenic peninsula bounded by the Potomac River, Belmont Bay, and Pohick Bay. The park provides a natural retreat for wildlife observation, particularly for American bald eagles, which nest in the area. With over six miles of unpaved hiking trails and three miles of paved multi-use trails, visitors can explore diverse habitats including wetlands, forests, and open water. The park features a visitor center with exhibits and a gift shop, a car-top boat launch for canoes and kayaks, and seasonal watercraft rentals for exploring Belmont Bay and Kane's Creek. Fresh and brackish water fishing is available in Belmont Bay with a valid Virginia or Maryland fishing license. A universally accessible group picnic area with seven tables and a charcoal grill can accommodate up to 50 people and is available for rent during park hours. Established in 1985 after conservation efforts prevented development of the peninsula, Mason Neck State Park connects with the Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge. The park is a day-use facility only with no overnight camping, cabins, or lodging. Park hours are 7 a.m. to dusk from October 1 to April 30, and 6 a.m. to dusk from May 1 to September 30.
