About
Fort Hunt Picnic Areas is a day-use picnic facility located within Fort Hunt Park, managed by the National Park Service as part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The park is situated just two miles from Mount Vernon, George Washington's historic home. No overnight camping is permitted at this location. The facility offers six reservable picnic areas (A, B, C1, C2, C3, and D) available from April 1 through October 31. Areas A, B, C2, and D feature covered pavilions, while C1 and C3 are open areas with picnic tables only. Only Area A has electricity and permits amplified sound. Area E is open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors must bring their own grills if they wish to cook. The park has a rich history, transforming from George Washington's farmland to a Spanish-American War fort to a top-secret intelligence camp during World War II. Four historic batteries remain on site but are closed to the public due to asbestos contamination from the WWII era. The grounds are open year-round from sunrise to sunset for walking and exploring the trails.
Directions
From Interstate 395, take exit 10B for George Washington Memorial Parkway. Merge onto the parkway and continue for about 12 miles. Turn right onto Fort Hunt Road and continue to the park.
