About
Fort Hunt Park is a National Park Service recreation area located along the Potomac River in Northern Virginia, just two miles from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The park offers six distinct picnic rental areas: Areas A, B, C-1, C-2, C-3, and D. Areas A, B, C-2, and D feature covered pavilions, while C-1 and C-3 are open areas with picnic tables only. Area A is the only location with electricity and where amplified sound is permitted. The park's rich history spans from George Washington's original farmland to a Spanish-American War fort, and later served as a top-secret intelligence camp during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the remains of Batteries Robinson, Sater, Porter, and Mount Vernon built during the Spanish-American War era. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed trails behind these historic batteries that provide peaceful walks through the woods with views of the Potomac River. Fort Hunt Park is ideal for large picnics, family gatherings, and outdoor recreation with several large fields available. The inner lane of the Loop Road past Area A is closed to vehicles and serves as a multi-use trail. The park connects to the Mount Vernon Trail, offering excellent opportunities for biking and bird watching along the river. Sports facilities, playgrounds, and ample open space make this a local favorite for recreation and relaxation in a lush, tree-filled environment.
Directions
From Interstate 395, take exit 10B for George Washington Memorial Parkway. Merge onto the parkway and continue for about 12 miles. Turn right onto Fort Hunt Road and continue to the park.
