Mason Neck State Park Paddle In Campground

Open

Open year-round. Sites are first-come, first-served. Accessible only by non-motorized watercraft.

About

Mason Neck State Park Paddle-In Campground provides a rare primitive camping experience in the Northern Virginia suburbs. The tent-only campsites are accessible exclusively by canoe, kayak, or other non-motorized watercraft, ensuring a secluded wilderness atmosphere despite the park's proximity to the Washington D.C. metro area. The park occupies a peninsula formed by Pohick Bay to the north, Belmont Bay to the south, and the Potomac River to the east. This location makes it one of the premier spots in Virginia for observing American bald eagles, along with over 200 other bird species including whistling swans and various waterfowl. The surrounding Elizabeth Hartwell National Wildlife Refuge enhances the area's ecological significance. Paddlers can launch from the park's car-top boat ramp or rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from the visitor center seasonally. Kane's Creek and Belmont Bay offer calm protected waters ideal for reaching the paddle-in sites and exploring the diverse wetland habitats.
