About
Leesylvania State Park Campground is a unique camping destination nestled along the tidal shores of the historic Potomac River, approximately 25 miles from both Washington, D.C., and Fredericksburg. The campground operates seasonally from March through October and offers two distinct camping experiences: a small primitive group campground with tent-only sites, and four paddle-in campsites exclusively accessible by canoe or kayak. All camping requires advance reservations made directly through the park office. The 556-acre park blends natural beauty with significant historical features. Listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, Leesylvania was the birthplace of Henry Lee III, known as 'Light Horse Harry,' a Revolutionary War cavalry colonel and father of Civil War General Robert E. Lee. The property also served as a Confederate gun emplacement during the Civil War, with visible remains still present at Freestone Point. Five hiking trails wind through the park, including a segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, offering scenic overlooks of the river and access to historic sites. The park provides extensive water-based recreation on the Potomac River, which is tidal and considered fresh water at this location. Facilities include a two-ramp boat launch with sailboat hoists, a 300-foot accessible fishing pier, and a cartop launch on Powells Creek. The river offers excellent largemouth bass fishing, along with catfish, perch, and striped bass. A visitor center operates seasonally with historic and nature displays, live animals, and a gift shop. Four large picnic shelters are available for rent. The park opens daily at 6:00 a.m. with closing times varying by season, and parking fees are required year-round.
