About
Maquoketa Caves State Park has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts since the 1860s, making it one of Iowa's earliest state parks. With more caves than any other state park, it offers a truly unique adventure for visitors. The park's six-mile trail system connects caves and scenic overlooks while weaving through rich forested landscapes and dramatic geologic formations. The park features approximately 13 caves ranging from walk-through caves like the 1,100-foot Dancehall Cave to more challenging caves like Hernado's Hideaway and Shinbone Cave that require crawling through tight spaces. Notable landmarks include the Natural Bridge standing 50 feet above Raccoon Creek and the 17-ton Balanced Rock. An interpretive center provides information about cave geology, park history, and White Nose Syndrome affecting local bat populations. The recently upgraded campground features both electric and non-electric sites among beautiful pine trees, along with primitive hike-in sites for a more backcountry experience. Historic CCC-era picnic shelters from the 1930s, a playground, and modern restroom facilities with showers round out the park amenities. All campsites require advance reservations.
