About
Blanding Landing Recreation Area occupies a scenic location on the east bank of the Mississippi River in the rugged, unglaciated hills of northwest Illinois. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground sits along the river backwaters and provides a peaceful escape from more crowded camping destinations. The facility offers 30 sites with 50-amp electrical hookups and 7 non-electric sites, accommodating both RVs and tents. A shower building, dump station, and boat ramp serve campers. The Mississippi River is the main attraction, drawing anglers year after year. Channel catfish is the most popular target, but the waters also hold bluegill, walleye, crappie, and northern pike. The backwater areas are especially productive for fishing and are renowned among birders for the variety of waterfowl and migratory species. The campground itself is shaded and relatively secluded, though visitors should be aware that active railroad tracks run adjacent to the property, with frequent train traffic throughout the day and night. The campground is located 13 miles south of Galena, a historic town where 85 percent of the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The surrounding landscape escaped the Ice Age glaciers, leaving behind clusters of rugged hills and winding roads that are ideal for scenic drives. Access to the campground requires navigating narrow, hilly gravel roads, so larger rigs should proceed with caution. Maximum stay is 14 nights within any rolling 30-day period.
Directions
From Highway 20, 13 miles south of Galena, turn west on Blackjack Road and follow directional signs to the campground. Do not take Diggin Hill Road. The final approach uses narrow, winding gravel roads through hilly terrain.
