About
Wapsipinicon State Park is one of Iowa's oldest state parks, encompassing 394 acres along sandstone and limestone bluffs of the Wapsipinicon River near Anamosa. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with many structures including a three-span bowstring arch bridge, lodge, and shelters handcrafted by prisoners from the nearby Anamosa State Penitentiary in the early 20th century. The park features unique geological formations including Horse Thief Cave, named after legendary horse thieves who used it as an escape route, and Ice Cave, known for its cool temperatures even in summer. Both caves served as shelters for prehistoric Native American cultures. Over 3.5 miles of multi-use trails wind through wooded canopy and open grass prairies, offering opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The Wapsipinicon River, locally known as the Wapsi, provides excellent fishing for channel and flathead catfish, spring crappies, bullheads, and smallmouth bass. Dutch Creek meanders through the park before emptying into the river. A nine-hole golf course operated by the Wapsipinicon Country Club sits within park boundaries. The campground offers electric sites, full hookup sites, non-electric sites, and walk-in tent sites, with modern restrooms and showers available during the main season.
Directions
Located on the southwest side of Anamosa. From Highway 151, take exit 49 (northbound) and go north on County Road E-34 about three miles. The park entrance is on the right before crossing the bridge. From exit 54 (southbound), turn right onto 3rd Street, which becomes Scott Street. Turn left onto Main Street heading west, which curves south and becomes Elm Street. Cross the bridge on E-34 and the park entrance is on the left.
