About
Maple Lake Campground offers a peaceful, timbered retreat along a small mountain lake in Payson Canyon. Located at 5,800 feet elevation, the campground features 7 single sites nestled among white fir, pinyon pine, and Gambel oak that provide shade and shelter. The campground's seclusion, accessed via a narrow paved road over a mile from the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway, creates a relaxed atmosphere away from busier canyon campgrounds.
The calm waters of Maple Lake are ideal for canoeing, floating, kayaking, and swimming. Rainbow and brook trout fishing is popular both in the lake and in the creek below the campground. The Red Lake Trail leaves from the upper camping areas near the lake, providing access to the adjacent Mount Nebo Wilderness Area with its pristine waters, abundant wildlife, vibrant wildflowers, and numerous trail opportunities.
The campground is best suited for tents and very small campers due to limited accessibility and site size. The 37-mile Nebo Loop Scenic Byway stretches through high alpine terrain, dense forests, and colorful meadows, with nearby attractions including Devils Kitchen Geological Area and its interesting red rock hoodoos accessible via a half-mile round trip trail.
