About

Bear Canyon Campground is positioned at 6,800 feet elevation on the boundary of the Mount Nebo Wilderness Area, just off the Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway. The campground occupies a large grassy meadow with aspen and fir trees lining the edges, though shade within individual campsites is limited. Each site provides views of the surrounding Wasatch Range and Mount Nebo, the highest peak along the Wasatch Front at 11,877 feet. Salt Creek flows along the campground's edge, offering rainbow trout fishing opportunities. The Bear Canyon Trail departs from the campground entrance and provides access for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians into the Mount Nebo Wilderness. The wilderness area features pristine alpine scenery, abundant wildlife, summer wildflowers, and numerous trail opportunities. Devil's Kitchen Geological Area lies 6 miles away along the Nebo Loop, offering a half-mile trail to distinctive red rock hoodoos. The campground includes 6 single sites and 3 group sites, with both flush and vault toilets available. No potable water is available on-site; campers must bring their own drinking water. Gates close at 10 p.m. nightly. The 37-mile Nebo Loop Scenic Byway passes through high alpine terrain, dense forests, and colorful meadows, making this an ideal base for exploring the area. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov.

Directions

From I-15, take Nephi exit 225. Travel about 5 miles east on Highway 132 to the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. Turn left onto the byway and travel 3.5 miles to the Bear Canyon turnoff (Forest Road 048). Turn left. Bear Canyon Campground is located at the end of the road, just past Ponderosa Campground.
