About
Manzanita Lake Cabin offers a quintessential Alaska wilderness experience in the heart of Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness. This rustic 12x14-ft pan-abode style cabin, constructed in 1973, is perched near a dramatic series of cascading waterfalls on the northwest arm of Manzanita Lake, approximately 28 miles northeast of Ketchikan. The cabin accommodates six guests with two single and two double bunks, and includes a small wood stove for heat, a cooking counter, table with benches, and food storage. Access is exclusively by float plane or canoe, as helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. The surrounding old-growth forest of spruce, hemlock, and cedar provides habitat for mountain goats, black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, moose, bald eagles, and beavers. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for exploring the lake, though visitors must bring their own life jackets. This is a primitive cabin with no electricity, indoor plumbing, potable water, or cell phone coverage. Visitors must bring drinking water, sleeping bags, cooking gear, toilet paper, garbage bags, and all other necessities. The lake offers excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and kokanee salmon. Hunting for Sitka black-tailed deer and black bear is available with appropriate permits.
